St. Nicholas Parish Three-year Plan
Saint Nicholas Parish's three-year plan falls under the four main categories of the parish's mission statement: Koinonia -- community building, Diakonia -- service/outreach, Kerygma -- proclamation of the word and Eucharistia -- worship.
The parish will continue programs and activities currently in place.
In addition, under each heading:
(Red text means this activity has been accomplished.)

KOINONIA

Goal #1: Increase the number of parishioners who readily volunteer to organize and/or assist in parish activities. Work toward a better implementation of the time and talent aspects of stewardship.
     Activities

#1 – Continue the annual parish picnic: 2009, 2010, 2011
#2 – Continue the parish meals: St. Nicholas celebration, Thomas Sunday 2009, 2010, 2011, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, 2009, 2010, 2011; volunteer appreciation dinner, 2009, 2010, 2011. Other communal activities: Food for Thought sessions: #1, #2, #3, church decorating for Easter 2009, 2010, 2011 and Christmas, 2009, 2010, 2011.
#3 – list and publish names of those currently volunteering in January and March, 2009; solicit commitment of new volunteers in September, 2009.
#4 – Visit the homebound during the Christmas season, 2009, 2010, 2011; continue listing of homebound in the parish bulletin.

Goal #2: Make the parish youth program more than just religious education, working together with other parishes whenever possible.
     Activities:

#1 – Plan a youth outing to a play at the Palace Theater (schedule needed to determine date); schedule a boat cruise to the Lighthouse in the summer of 2009. Youth outing for 2010 -- Crushers game, 2011.

DIAKONIA

Goal #1: As a parish reach out better to those members who have experienced a tragedy or loss and assist elderly parishioners.
     Activities:

#1 – Organize an inter-generational ladies’ group to visit and bring to church women who are home bound. The group will also have programs of exercise, spiritual development and entertainment outings. The parish nursing program will also be involved. This should be organized in 2009 and implemented no later than January, 2010.
#2 – Outreach to the community: food collections throughout the year, Christmas caroling at nursing homes.
#3 – Adopt a family for Christmas, 2009 and 2010.
#4 – Participate in the Save the Palace program in both years.

Goal #2: Plan and implement a program to reach out to those who have fallen away from the faith.
     Activities:

#1 – Plan a special weekend in 2010 to learn the customs of our church (v.g. baking, pirohi, Easter baskets) so that the elders teach the younger generation.
#2 – prepare a parish cook book in 2009.
#3 – Invite lapsed parishioners to a Saturday event in 2010 to share special recipes, customs and memories.
#4 – When attending funerals, invite the fallen away to return to the parish. This is to be done in 2009 and 2010.

KERYGMA

Goal #1: Improve the adult education program and get better participation.
     Activities:

#1 – Put informational pieces (v.g. about Christmas season) in the bulletin in 2009 and 2010.
#2 – Adult formation sessions during Great Fast in 2009 (Social teaching of the Catholic Church) and in 2010 -- Doctrine and Liturgy
#3 – Short presentations during each Food for Thought in 2009 and 2010, such as church practices, parts of the funeral rites, preparation of the altar bread, icons, Great Fast worship services, Akathist to the Mother of God.

Goal #2: Plan and implement programs of spiritual enrichment such as retreats, days of prayer/recollection and presentations.
     Activities:

#1 – Two or three living history talks each year by members of the parish. (one accomplished and video taped)
#2 – Summer picnic lunch in the prayer garden, perhaps with dedication and a blessing of a peace pole. This is to be done in 2009 or 2010 when the garden is completed. (Garden won't be completed until 2014, the 100th anniversary of the parish.)
#3 – A parish retreat each year, all-day on a Saturday with lunch and breakout sessions. Accomplished for 2010). 2011.

EUCHARISTIA

Goal #1: Increase participation in the weekend and holy day vespers and matins.
     Activities:

#1 – March 29, 2009 Food for Thought presentations about vespers and the Sunday observance

#2 – Sept. 27, 2009 Food for Thought presentation about matins
#3 – 2010 Food for Thought presentation about the Akathist to the Mother of God.

Goal #2: Offer akathist, moleben and paraclis services and develop good attendance at these.
     Activities:

#1 – Akathist to the Mother of God to be scheduled several times in 2009.
#2 – Moleben to St. Nicholas to be scheduled several times in 2010.
